Season 2026: 1 July to 30 September

The winter table runs to 30 September, then the summer table applies. Children aged 4 to 12 pay half the adult fare in both classes and children under 4 travel free. Argentine senior and other resident discount categories pay ARS 45,000-52,000 ($29.80-$34.50) in Turista.

Season 2026-2027: 1 October to 31 March

The main season table, which covers the summer high season and the big cruise months. The Turista adult fare rises against the winter table, and Premium rises by more. Children 4-12 again pay half and under 4s ride free.

What the fare does not include

The ticket covers the ride and nothing else. The national park entry fee is not included and is mandatory, a point the official site states explicitly. For a foreign visitor the daily park pass costs ARS 40,000 ($26.50), so our sum for a Turista adult riding on their own arrangement is ARS 120,000 ($79.60) in fares and entry before any transfer.

Food on the departure platform and any souvenirs are also extra.

What you actually get

The ride covers roughly 7 km of track through forest and peat bog beside the Pipo River. The official site does not state a journey duration, so treat any figure you read elsewhere as the tour listing's or as a guess. Our estimate from the listings that sell the ticket at 2 hours is that you should plan around an hour or so on board plus check-in and transfers, meaning half a day out of your schedule in total.

The scenery is forest and bog, not postcard mountains

Set expectations now. The line runs through lenga forest and open peat bog in a shallow valley. There are no glacier walls and no sweeping alpine views along the way.

If you want the mountain postcard, that is the Martial Glacier or the Beagle Channel, not this train. The ride's appeal is the old carriages, the steam locomotive and the story of the convict railway it re-creates.

Turista or Premium

Turista is a straightforward carriage at ARS 80,000 ($53.10) in high season. Premium costs ARS 250,000 ($165.80), more than three times as much, and adds a better carriage plus food service on the departure platform. Our pick is Turista for almost everyone.

Premium only earns its price if the platform meal and the more comfortable seat matter to you as part of the outing.

Who is happiest on board

Families with small children are the happiest customers, and so are railway enthusiasts and anyone who likes a good story. The ride works well as one stop on a park day, paired with the park's shoreline and viewpoints. If the train does not appeal, the park stands on its own and the park tour without the train costs less than the bundled versions at $42.50.

Departure slots by season

There are three slots a day, shifting slightly between the summer and winter seasons. Your reservation is valid on any train within your chosen slot.

Check-in and the 10 minute rule

Check-in opens 45 minutes before your slot. If you have not checked in 10 minutes before departure, your reservation is released to walk-up buyers. In practice that means arriving at the station close to an hour before your slot if you want your pick of the carriages.

Seat assignment within the slot is first come.

How long to allow

The railway does not state a journey duration, which is a gap worth knowing before you plan a tight afternoon. Our estimate is to allow half a day door to door, covering the transfer from town, the 45 minute check-in, the ride and the return.

You pay to enter the park even if you only ride

The station lies past the park entrance, so every rider passes the park gate and the daily entry fee applies even to passengers who plan nothing else in the park. For foreign visitors that is ARS 40,000 ($26.50) per day. This is the single most common budgeting mistake on this excursion, and the official railway site flags it explicitly.

Your options for the 7-8 km out of town

No city bus line serves the park. Shuttle minibuses, labelled Transporte Regular, leave from Maipu and Juana Fadul in town daily from roughly 8:00 to 20:00. Recent visitor reports put the round trip at ARS 16,000-28,000 ($10.61-$18.57), but there is no published fare, so treat that as reported and confirm on the spot.

A taxi or Uber is the straightforward alternative. A city route called Shuttle 3 is reported to reach the station area from town, with no published fare in any official source we checked. The simplest answer for most visitors is a bundled tour, because pickup and park access are handled for you.

Our sum, piece by piece

Even if its listing price excludes the park entry fee, it undercuts the assembled version comfortably.

When the train-only ticket still wins

The train-only ticket at $50 makes sense if you are renting a car, if you plan a full self-guided day in the park anyway, or if you want to choose your own slot and travel outside a tour schedule. The savings case rests on the shuttle being avoidable, so it mostly applies to drivers.

For a small group with different agendas, the tour with the train as an option splits the difference.
